Of the nine contredanses known to exist in piano form, Jeno Jando plays the seven which are theorized by Shin Kojima to be authentic Ludwig van Beethoven, and omits the two which Kojima believes to be arrangements by Caspar Carl van Beethoven. On Bagatelles and Dances vol. 2, Naxos 8.553798.

Hess 109 Leonore, 1805 version. Berlin Classics 0011402 BC; Edda Moser as Leonore, Herbert Blomstedt conducting the Staatskapelle Dresden. This recording omits WoO 2b, the introduction to Act II, which can be found on this site, and which also is on the CBE recording of Leonore. The CBE version of Leonore, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner, is not strictly the 1805 version, but an amalgam of Hess 109 (the 1805 version) and Hess 110 (the 1806 version). However, the Berlin Classics version includes the March at the beginning of Act II; that March was not added until the 1806 version. Thus, to properly hear Hess 109, you must add WoO 2b at the beginning of Act II and omit the March.

Hess 110 Leonore (1806 version). World Premiere Recording is now available on MD&G as MDG-3370826.

Hess 229, Languisco e moro. Unknown Beethoven, volume 2, Berlin Classics 009132 BC.

The following works from the counterpoint studies with Albrechtsberger were released on a recording entitled "Complete Organ Works", Musical Heritage Society 1517 (LP), Wilhelm Krumbach, organ.

Hess 237 (one three-part fugue)
Hess 238 (two of the four-part fugues)
Hess 239 (Choralfugue #2 of 3)
Hess 243 (one double fugue)
Four Part Fugue in A minor, Hess 238 Nr. 4
Hess 244 (four-part triple fugue, #1 of 2)
These works are not identified as such, however, but are rather grouped together under the misnomer of "Fugue cycle in D minor on themes by J.S. Bach." These pieces were never intended to be played together as a "fugue cycle," which exists only in the imaginations of the creators of this album. So far as we can determine, the themes are all either by Fux or Albrechtsberger, and not J.S. Bach. Furthermore, this album contains by no means all of the organ works, omitting over half of them!.

The Krumbach LP of "Complete Organ Works" was later reissued on CD by Koch Treasure #3-1609-2 with all of the errors intact. Hess 238 Nr. 1 has also been issued on CD by Raptus Records, #397.02.89, played by a string quartet, along with several works by Beethoven's pupil, Ferdinand Ries.

Twelve contrapuntal studes arranged for orchestra were also issued on an LP Everest 3419 entitled "Beethoven-The Young Prometheus." The following works appear on this LP:

1. Praeludium and fugue F major (Hess 30)
2. Fugue A minor (Hess 238 nr. 6)
3. Praeludium and fugue C major (Hess 31)
4. Praeludium and fugue E minor (Hess 29)
5. Choral fugue G major (Hess 239 nr. 3)
6. Fugue B flat major (Hess 238 nr. 5)
7. Fugue alla duodecima D minor (Hess 243 nr. 5)
8. Double Fugue with 3 subjects F major (Triple Fugue, Hess 244 nr. 2)
9. Fugue alla duodecima C major (Hess 243 nr. 4)
10. Fugue C major (Hess 238 nr. 3, followed by a repeat of Hess 243 nr. 4)
11 Choral fugue F major (Hess 239 nr. 1)
12. Double fugue with 3 subjects - D minor (Triple Fugue, Hess 244 nr. 1)

Hess 245, (fragment of a fugue for string quartet), appears played by Quartetto Paolo Borciani on Stradivarius STR 33362.

Hess 264, Te Solo Adoro, Canon, appears on Unknown Beethoven vol. 2, misidentified as WoO 186.

Hess 275, Canon in A-flat (also catalogued as Hess 329), is played by Steven Beck on Beethoven: Cameos for Piano, Monument Records 03.04.01.

Hess 297 Adagio for three horns, appears on ARTS 47551-2, volume 2 of the Arts label's complete Beethoven music for winds.

Hess 298, Sketches for Symphony in C minor. Anatol Karemacher, piano, on Raptus Records 389.02.88.

Also of potential interest are the set of LP's entitled: Discourses - All About Music, (1974) "Now on record for the first time ever... the secrets of Beethoven's sketch books, revealing how he created his great masterpieces, from the first jottings to the finished work. Presented and illustrated by Denis Matthews." These intriguing recordings have recently been reissued on CD and are available from Discourses in Europe and from Monument Records in the USA.
