Detailed Information
Only a portion of this sonata is extant; the beginnings of both movements are missing, as is the balance of the sonata after the fragments presented here. The first section preserved here was likely part of a set of theme and variations. The missing openings of both movements makes a reconstruction almost impossible. The fact that it says "Da Capo" 2 times in the Presto suggests we're dealing with a Rondo, and that the fragments we have here are the 1st and 2nd alternatives, the main theme itself (refrain) missing.

Acclaimed Chicago violinist Rachel Barton Pine performed these fragments of the sonata live on WFMT-FM, 98.7 in Chicago, as part of the "Live from WFMT" series in January, 2005. The Unheard Beethoven worked with Ms. Barton Pine to assemble the most complete performance ever of Beethoven's works for violin and piano at one time, including advising her of the existence of these sonata fragments. The recording of this work, with accompanist Matthew Hagle, is presented here with the kind permission of Rachel Barton Pine and WFMT.
