Detailed Information
Drafts for the Third Symphony, op. 55, Second and Fourth Movements (1803)

These sketches for the Third Symphony are from the Eroica or Landsberg 6 sketchbook of 1803 presently held by the Biblioteka Jagiellonska of Krakow, Poland. As Gustav Nottebohm noted, the second movement funeral march, except for the C major section, came hard for Beethoven. The first sketch presented here, from p. 6 of the sketchbook, is recognizably the same theme but it is rather different in character. The second sketch, derived from p. 42 of the sketchbook contains the more familiar rhythms of the final symphony but goes into some different melodic directions. At bar 59 of the midi (3:26), we find the themes for a fugato that appear on pages 9 and 42.

The midi concludes (at 4:06) with a sketch for the "Hungarian March" variation (in G minor) of the Finale (p. 71).
