Dr. Arnold Schmitz theorized that it also might be the beginning of an Andante, but it seems to us that this fragment is more likely meant to be a transitional figure, as it slides the theme from the key of E into E-flat. After the fragment, Beethoven writes "u.s.w." (et cetera), so we have given both the original sketch and also a version which includes a repitition of the fragment in the new key of E-flat, which in turn descends to D major. This cue is on the same grouping of sketch leaves as Hess 60 and 61 and Biamonti 268-284, in the Beethovenhaus in Bonn.
